Laredo, Texas - April 20, 2009 – More than 30 CenterPoint Energy employees, and their families, walked 5 miles Sunday morning in the South Texas heat to help the March of Dimes organization raise funds to continue their research, education, community services and advocacy programs.
In addition to the walk, CenterPoint Energy employees recently held a steak plate sale and raised more than $2,000. Half of the proceeds will benefit the March of Dimes and the remainder will go to the Relay for Life fundraiser supporting the American Cancer Society fight against cancer.
“We love to help the little babies. Fundraising is hard work; collecting donations, recruiting volunteers but in the end it’s all worth it. It’s all about helping babies and their families.” said Melissa Bernal, CenterPoint Energy operations support representative.
The March of Dimes’ mission is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. They carry out this mission through research, community services, education and advocacy to save babies' lives. March of Dimes researchers, volunteers, educators, outreach workers and advocates work together to give all babies a fighting chance against threats to their health: prematurity, birth defects, low birth weight.
