DES MOINES, Iowa – (April 1, 2009) – MidAmerican Energy Company has made its semiannual property tax payments for the 2008-2009 fiscal year to Iowa counties, schools and cities.
The statewide semiannual payment of more than $41.8 million makes MidAmerican the largest property tax-paying entity in Iowa. The tax payments are based on the investment MidAmerican has made in property necessary to enhance and maintain electric and natural gas service to its customers. MidAmerican’s investment ranges from power plants, wind turbines and natural gas distribution lines to transformers and meters. The payments benefit 80 of Iowa’s 99 counties.
“These tax payments help MidAmerican Energy-served counties and communities provide essential services to residents,” said Bill Fehrman, president of MidAmerican Energy. “The revenues, in part, support the many critical services which residents expect from local government – police and fire protection, education, public health and environmental services.”
Taxes paid to individual counties vary from region to region based on the amount of MidAmerican property in each county (see attached county-by-county listing of tax payments). The single largest tax bill installment of $11.93 million was paid in Polk County.
